They say disability is a matter of perception. If you can do one just one thing well you’re needed by someone. Having watched my brother struggle with his disability, I know this to be true.
The doctors told my parents that my brother was most likely not going to survive his first week born. I had to see my parents really sad for over days. Luckily the doctors were wrong, but my brother was born with difficulties. My brother was born with a heart problems, and he also only has four fingers on each hand. My brother had to stay his first three weeks in the hospital because he required special care. These three weeks were very hard for my family. Not for me because I did not understand what was going on, I was only five when my brother was born.
Finally three weeks passed and all the dramatic moment were gone. My brother was released from the hospital. It was getting dark outside and it was raining a lot. The whole way home all of us were silent and and you could only hear water pouring on the cars roof. My parents seemed exhausted and I could tell they haven't been sleeping these past weeks. It all seemed like a movie and felt like one also.
As years passed therapist told my family that it would be really hard for my brother to do the same things other kids his age would be able to do. We all knew that it was going to be hard but not impossible, and that there is going to be a time in life where he would just be like any other kid.
When my brother was a little kid about five or older he could not be able to play games, do sports, go to the bathroom on his own, draw or write. He would also have difficulties in class and sometimes he couldn't keep up to what others in class were doing. But when my brother was eight he could know do everything that others could do, which I think was really fast for his disability. They also say that the only disability in life is a bad attitude. My brother always had a good attitude which led him to accomplish his goals.
It was very hard for my brother in school because he had to deal with some bullies for some time. I feel like it was very inspiring to see my brother succeed in school and accomplish all his goals regarding all the bullies and his disability.
I know what it means to have a brother with a disability and to see your family go through the toughest times.
I know how hard it was for everyone in my family including my brother. I know my brother did not understand why he was born like that and why people would judge him when he was little.
I also know that this means that I always had to help out my brother no matter what and stay strong for him. And I know I had to be a good role model for him.
